Ingredient Watch: Mineral Oil

Mineral oil, petroleum jelly, petrolatum, and vaseline are liquid or semisolid mixtures of hydrocarbons derived from petroleum.  These ingredients are widely used in cosmetics and skin care products and have been for decades, but are they beneficial to the skin?

Advertising claims have been made that suggest these ingredients help to moisturize the skin but, in fact the opposite is true.  These oils are very heavy and will clog pores, dehydrate, and create an unhealthy barrier that blocks oxygen from reaching the skin.  Oxygen is important for cellular health and lack of oxygen actually increases the aging process.

When looking for moisturizing or anti-aging products, make sure the oils used are plant-derived.  Botanical oils will not only help moisturize your skin, they also contain vital nutrients and vitamins for optimal cellular health.
